The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
