Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
