Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
